The stage is almost set, with just over a week to go before the arrival of the FIM Trial World Championship to the UK mainland, with the T+MX Grand Prix Great Britain taking place at Hawkstone Park on 29 / 30 July 2006. This famous Shropshire venue has a rich history of hosting epic international motorcycle events, and the forthcoming trial looks set to continue this proud tradition.
Chasing a record breaking eighth World outdoor title, British favourite Dougie Lampkin is not only looking to repeat the victory he secured at the same event last year, but with the added bonus of having the opportunity to record his 100th Grand Prix win to mark yet another milestone in his incredible sporting career. Cheered on by eight thousand home fans in 2005, Lampkin snatched a dramatic last lap win twelve months ago and will be hoping for a similar performance to improve on the third position he currently holds in this year's series.
Lampkin will not be the only rider looking forward to returning to home soil, as having recently claimed the European title to add to his World Junior championship, James Dabill is sure to welcome the opportunity to perform in front of a British crowd. Now competing in the World championship class, James' best result to date was a seventh place at the Portuguese Grand Prix earlier in the year. With plenty of vocal support behind him Dabill will be going all out to try and break into that exclusive top five.
Britain has plenty to shout about in every class. Young Michael Brown from Scarborough has a real chance of repeating Dabill's 2005 success and lifting this year's World Junior crown. Currently third in the overall standings, Brown is only seven points behind the series leader and could close the gap if he can pull off a victory on home turf. It is a similar story in the Youth class, with Alexz Wigg hunting down championship header Loris Gubian. Wigg has ground to make up after having missed the Japanese GP due to school exams, but is still in with a good chance of the title, with only ten out of twelve days counting in the supporting classes.
With event organisers L+M Events hard at work ahead of next weekend's event, good news has come courtesy of Sandiford Motorcycles. Three brand new Montesa Cota 4RT bikes have been kindly loaned to the event team by the official British importer in order to assist with course construction prior to the trial and to provide transport for the travelling marshals over the course of the weekend.
"We are delighted to be associated with the World trial. It was a great event last year, and it is sure to be better this time around. In addition to sponsoring a section, we will also have a dealer present and having the bikes there will really give us a good presence, on a weekend when both Dougie and Montesa could make history by winning his 100th World trial." Discounted advance tickets / pre booked camping sales close on 21st July, but entrance tickets / camping passes will be available on the gate throughout the weekend.
