The Colmore – the oldest National in the trials calendar – was spared the worst of the weather until the end last Sunday, at least making the results based on the sections and not the riders' start number.
There were no less than five previous winners of the Stratford on Avon MCC event lined up in 2015 including the still superb Tony Scarlett, who won the event back in 1989. This year the win went ro Ricky Wiggins
It was a long ride out to the first group at Meon Hill, where there were three subs based on the Cotswold's open banks.
Section one caused a few problems and Buster Regan dropped two marks here, while Emma Bristow parted with a maximum. Three hazards were lined up at Mickleton Woods and Ricky Wiggins, another of the top S3 runners, took a five on his punchcard here leaving local rider Shaun Fox to make the early running along with Simon Welch.
Kiftsgate came next with six sections which caused few problems, many of the top national runners remaining clean here.
Ross Danby, Sam Haslam and Richard Sadler were still to drop any marks but things were about to change.
Jones' Bank featured one really tricky hazard which involved a muddy slot and Danby parted with a dab as did Richard Timperley. These looked pretty good efforts until Sam Haslam came along and breezed through for the only clean of the day.
