ALEXZ Wigg is the winner of the 2010 Scottish Six Days Trial. In a nail-biting finish, the 20 year-old Beta rider won in style as, after Alexz went into the final day sharing the lead with long-time leader Michael Brown and eternal SSDT runner-up Ben Hemingway, he handled the pressure superbly to go clean on the final day and as his two rivals both lost marks, the North British Rubber Company Premier Award headed south to Wigg's Buckinghamshire home.
It was a real blow to Brown, the Scarborough rider having had the edge on the 270-strong field through the opening three days until his Sherco failed to start within the one minute time allowance on Thursday morning and the resulting five mark penalty ultimately cost him his first Scottish victory. Michael handled the situation with real dignity and he will surely lift the Premier Award one day soon.
For Ben Hemingway, finishing runner-up in the Scottish has almost become a way of life and the popular Yorkshireman, who really loves the Scottish, actually finished equal on marks with runner-up Brown - but lost-out on the tie-break. Ian Austermuhle finished fourth after a strong week-long challenge while top Scot by a long way was Kinlochleven's Gary Macdonald who was joint Best on Day on Tuesday.
It was a fine week on the weather front and most riders appreciated this although there were still 50 retirements which was a high proportion of the entry, many following mechanical problems but some, including Jack Challoner, retiring as a result of the Novavirus bug that swept through Fort William causing the club a shortage of observers as many were affected by the bug.
