Well, that escalated quickly.

The 2026 FIM World Supercross Championship is over – and after all the talk of a six-round global series, we got one.

World Supercross announced yesterday that the season would conclude with immediate effect, bringing an abrupt end to a campaign which began in Calgary in August and was supposed to continue through Birmingham, Buenos Aires, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Only the Canadian opener actually made it to the start gate.

The announcement comes just over two weeks after the cancellation of the planned British GP at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, which had been due to take place this Saturday. At the time, SX Global – the commercial rights holder behind the championship – said it was in discussions to secure significant new investment and that the process required further time and due diligence.

Those discussions are still ongoing.

In a brief statement, World Supercross said it remains in “advanced discussions” with potential investors regarding the future of the series and had taken the decision to end the current season while those talks continue.

The organisation insists it still believes in the global potential of the championship and remains optimistic that the investment discussions will provide a strong platform for its future.

Whether that future includes a 2027 championship remains to be seen.

For now, though, the only 2026 results on the books are those from Calgary, where Cooper Webb took the SX1 overall and Max Anstie topped SX2.

That leaves a distinctly odd-looking championship record, with Webb currently sitting on top of SX1 after a single round – and Anstie holding the equivalent position in SX2.

The cancellation also means the World Supercross riders, teams and fans who had been gearing up for a trip to Birmingham this weekend will instead be left wondering what happens next.

And that, rather than another gate drop, is the big question facing World Supercross now.

We’re promised further information on the future of the championship will be provided in due course.

We’ll be watching.
