News Trials

The trials world has lost an amazing West Country character in Colin Dommett, pictured here with son Scott in 2021 at his local Dartmoor Two Day Classic Trial, before he headed off to observe.

The trials world was deeply saddened on learning of the death of Colin Dommett. The West Country off-road motorcycle icon passed away on Thursday, February 8, at Manchester Royal Infirmary following surgery during a short but typically stoic battle with cancer.

Colin's son Scott summed it up succinctly saying, "Dad fought it right to the Ends cards. I am so proud of him."

British off-road sport has lost such a well-loved character in Colin. His Cornish burr was heard the length and bredth of the country because as well as competing in trials and scrambles CFD, as many referred to him, became a much sought after event commentator where his wealth of knowledge allowed him to keep a crowd informed and entertained almost indefinitely.

And his store of interesting stories and anecdotes made him a perfect MC or host for any motorcycle show or presentation.

Colin is best known for his trio of British Sidecar Trials Championship, all on Whitehawk Suzuki, with pal Eric Chamberlain in the chair.

He also competed and represented Great Britain in three consecutive International Six Days Trials, riding a Husqvarna in Italy in1968 followed by Triumph twins in Germany and Spain. He rode to a prestigious Gold Medal at the 1971 ISDT, held in the Isle of Man, in 1971 riding a Bultaco.

CFD is of course a legend in the South West Centre having held many official posts.

Your humble trials columnist enjoyed many informative and humorous chats with Colin at trials and shows all over the country. My favourite encounter was as recent as 2021 when, while on holiday in Devon, I surprised him by dropping in on the Dartmoor Two Day Classic Trial.

I am now thankful that I took the opportunity to take the snap of Colin and son Scott that accompanies this piece. Scott then of course rode the trial while Colin and I set off into the woods below Hound Tor where I bagged some pictures and CFD observed, with a greeting, banter and advice for every competitor, which all added to the enjoyment.

A treasured memory of time well spent in the company of a respected gentleman and friend.
