Guy Martin battles through Pre-65 on 350 Ariel
By John Dickinson on 4th May 16
WELL, Guy Martin came, saw and while he didnt exactly conquer, the road race ace and TV personality was without doubt the most popular Guest of Honour the trial has ever had.
He was applauded every inch of the way as he battled a 350 Ariel, in what was his first trial.
While no trials rider in the wildest of imaginations, Guy showed an almost scary resolve and was determined to reach the finish and also to reach every section Out card, often refusing the many offers to help.
Riding in road-racing boots and a boiler suit enhanced his reputation as slightly eccentric and that determination to do things his own way was obvious.
He could have ridden with Simon and Sam Sharp but just told them to ride their own trial and he would figure it out for himself.
And while he could have packed-up and gone home at any time he never gave up, to be recorded as the last official finisher.
At the end he did confess to finding the event a real challenge and that, amazingly, he would like to return some time, on a lighter, more suitable machine after a bit of practise.
Those who attended will certainly never forget the year Guy Martin entered the Scottish Pre-65.
It would have made a fascinating TV programme.
But the truth is Guy wasn't seeking publicity, he just wanted to be left to get on with what he regarded as a personal challenge.
