Report: Trial 2/ Trial 125 - Great Britain
By John Dickinson on 20th Jul 16
THE Trial2 class was all about Jack Price this week and the 19-year-old, from nearby Huddersfield, delivered the expectations in spades.
Displaying no nerves at all, Gas Gas rider Jack nailed a confident win on Saturday dropping just six marks with laps of 1-1-4 and the resulting 20 points earned him the title of Champion in the FIM World Cup class.
It was Jack's seventh win in a campaign that has truly seen him as the class act of the field.
Relishing the chance to ride on home turf the class was dominated by the Brits with only French challenger, Sherco-mounted Gael Chatagno able to squeeze himself onto the podium for third on Saturday.
With Jack in unbeatable form on the opening day and determined to take the World Cup in style, Welsh champ Iwan Roberts on the TTT Beta took a hard-fought second on Saturday and third on Sunday. That put him well clear in second place in the series ahead of Spain's Arnau Farre, the Gas Gas rider having a poor weekend managing to amass only 14 points in total.
It was very close for the minor placings on Saturday with Dan Peace just a single mark behind Chatagno in fourth and Lancashire's Jack Spencer just one more back in fifth after a typically gritty performance.
Cornwall's Toby Martyn added five points to the nine he had earned at the last round in Belgium, while Dec Bullock had a last lap to forget after looking like nailing a strong top-ten finish.
Sunday saw another Brit step up to the plate and it was Scarborough's Dan Peace who got the measure of the hazards, the Gas Gas rider posting three very consistent laps for a total of just 20. This was Jack's second win of the series having previously stood on the top step of the podium on the second day in Japan.
Dan's effort leap-frogged him in front of Chatagno in the series standings although with two days scores to drop the battle for third overall between Farre, Peace and Chatagno will go to the last round in Italy.
Jack Spencer was in the points again on day two with a fighting sixth and his weekend haul of 21 points placed him 15th in the overall standings.
Sherco mounted Luke Walker, in his first round of the season, took a brace of top 10 placings, ninth each day while Toby Martyn bagged four points for twelfth in a close fought contest.
Trial125
THE Trial125 class has been dominated by Britain's Jack Peace.
But while previous rounds have suffered with small entries, the British round was boosted considerably by a host of home riders and a total of 19 eager competitors contested the two days at Tong. And contested it was, with a weekend of attacking rides from the youngest category with recently-crowned World Cup Champ Jack the class of the field, claiming yet another brace of wins in front of the home fans.
His season-long rivalry with German peer Max Faude continued but Jack always had the edge and in fact Faude faded to fourth on the second day after being runner-up on Saturday.
On Saturday Peace was always in control with laps of three and two and then a dream flawless final circuit to show why he is the champ.
Faude finished second but Devon's Beta-riding Billy Green showed what was to come with a well-earned podium in his first TWC appearance.
And Brits dominated with Kieran Child a close fourth and Scot Joe Dawson, with Stuart Mack minding, repaying the favour as Joe has previously done that job for Stuart.
They were backed-up by Thomas Culliford seventh and Oliver Smith rounding out the top 10.
Sunday saw scores rise although not dramatically with Peace again dominant. But Billy Green proved that he is a real prospect for the future by improving on Saturday's third place with a fine second.
Opening and closing laps of two and one were spoiled by a wayward middle lap that cost Billy 14, yet he still finished a full 16 ahead of third-placed Eric Miquel of Spain.
And he vanquished series runner-up Max Faude who was relegated to fourth.
Then came the marauding Brits headed by Thomas Culliford who moved up to fifth, Kiaran Child sixth, Oli Smith eighth, Toby Churchill nine and Joe Dawson rounding out the top 10.
It was a really well-contested class with the lads' effort well-appreciated by the enthusiastic spectators.
