Team Spain predictably dominated the X-Trial of Nations on home soil in Seville, with Repsol Honda teammates Toni Bou and Gabriel Marcelli securing victory in front of an appreciative crowd.
The big news though – especially for those of us who live on this windswept rock in the North Sea – is that Team Yorkshire… sorry, Team GB… took a stunning second place. God’s County residents Harry Hemingway and Jack Peace rode brilliantly to keep the Italian duo of Matteo Grattarola and Francesco Titli at bay and record Team GB’s best result since 2017.
The Spanish pair stamped their authority on the event from the off, winning the opening two qualifying rounds to book their place in the final. Britain and Italy also held their nerve to progress, while last year’s runners-up Team France were eliminated along with Team USA, who started with only one rider after Ryon Land injured his finger practising for the event.
In the final the Spanish domination continued and by the midway point Bou and Marcelli were comfortably clear. Behind them the Brits held a sizeable advantage over the Italians and, although Grattarola and Titli mounted a late charge, their effort came too late. The order remained unchanged to the finish – Spain victorious over the British Lions, with the Italian duo rounding out the podium.
