Trials Torque: Northern lights get ready to shine

THIS weekend will see plenty of action for northern trials enthusiasts if they head toward the East Yorks coast, writes John Watson.
That's where all Centre clubs have pooled manpower and resources to organise one of the best events for Clubmen on the calendar, the ever-popular East Yorks Two Day Trial.
The 120-rider entry will cover a variety of terrain as clerk of the course Pat Galway and his team stick to the successful format of traditional sections over the two days that every rider can have a go at – and finish with a smile on their face.
That is good news, because there are many ‘stars' in the programme – the stars denoting age, not ability in some cases, so good luck to them.
Matt Maynard from Carlton in Cleveland will be out to defend the East Yorks crown he won last year, following a few near misses but pushing hard will be the experienced Tom Hick, a former winner and riding well.
Two youngsters in with a chance are Pocklington's Olly Kendra fresh from a couple of confidence boosting wins last week and Scarborough's stylish Michael Todd.
A trio of Sharps – Matt, Mick and Pete – will keep it tight, as will the experienced Ian Hopley from Danby, who enjoyed such a good first day last year.
Two Vertigo mounted riders in the line-up who will trying hard to be best of the rest are Yarm's Darren Johnson and D Cameron, while the Lincolnshire ladies, Catherine and Louise Alford always perform well here.
All in all a fantastic weekend of clubman riding lies ahead.
The start is at the Flask Inn on the Whitby to Scarborough road, with an 11am start on Saturday and 9.30am on Sunday.
