IN A summer where we seem to have been constantly playing a weekend game of Deal or No Deal' with the Great British weather and generally coming up as losers to the rain it was a real surprise to have a weekend of blue skies for round five of the BYMX Championships.

The event, superbly organized and marshalled bythe Cumbria Youth MXC, at Haverigg, on the South West tip of thecounty, had a few more surprises in store also as we witnessed a raftof cracking performances from the likes of Joe Gregory, Mel Pocock,Jack Rowland, David Games, Dan McCanney and Robbie Muscat. Performancesthat didn't end up in overall wins but really caught the eye, had thepaddock talking and definitely rattled the cages of the variouschampionship leaders.

Joe Gregory, in what must surely be the bestperformance of his life, on the Danger UK Honda went desperately closeto snatching an overall win in the Premier class after threemagnificent rides which included a race-long duel with Alex Rockwell inrace one, a fighting charge through the field next time out, andculminated with a well earned win in race three.

Joe went into the final encounter just one pointbehind double day one race winner Alex Rockwell and it proved to be thebest of the weekend in the top class but it was not to be Joe's day.The final plaudits of the weekend went to Mel Pocock as he tore intothe race with just one aim. Reeling in Alex Rockwell at a rate of knotsat the head of the field, Mel was on fire, and with a dramatic last lappass Mel took a truly superb win to add to his previous race secondplace.

When it was all totalled up though Alex Rockwellhad extended his championship lead with yet another overall win asLewis King was left to ponder

his bad luck again after a last race coming together with Luke Burton ended the day on a controversial note and maybe ended his championship hopes too.
