A CHALLENGING event at Borno, Italy, marked the halfway point of the World Enduro Championship at the weekend when Juha Salminen and Mika Ahola claimed double wins in their respective Enduro 1 and Enduro 2 classes, while Marko Tarkkala and Ivan Cervantes shared top honours in Enduro 3, with Scot, Euan McConnell, claiming his highest result of the season finishing in sixth on day two. In the Enduro Junior class Christophe Nambotin and Joakim Ljunggren took a win each, while Daryl Bolter placed as best Brit in sixth and fourth.

Factory KTM rider Juha Salminen continued his domination of the Enduro 1 world championship in Italy claiming his fourth consecutive double class win of the season.

But it was a close run thing on day one as the six-time world champion finished just under six seconds ahead of French Yamaha rider, Marc Germain. With Germain performing at his best early in the day when conditions were wet, Juha clawed his way back into contention and claimed his seventh day win of 2007.

Behind there was little to separate Italian Simone Albergoni, Poland's Bartosz Oblucki and Spain's Cristobal Guerrero. All riders made mistakes at some point during the day, so it was home rider Albergoni who claimed the final podium position, while Oblucki and Guerrero were separated by next to nothing in fourth and fifth.

Day two again saw Germain start strongly but a disastrous final extreme test saw him drop to fifth in class. Quickly getting to grips with the challenging Italian special tests, Salminen topped seven of the day's tests in the E1 class to finish 40 seconds clear of Albergoni.

''It was a really nice race, but difficult,'' commented Juha at the finish. ''It seems like it's been a long time since we had a real enduro like this, the rocks everywhere made it really difficult. All of the tests were different, which was good.

''I felt that I rode pretty well. We took a bit of a risk going for a tyre that works well in dry conditions, which made things a little bit difficult at the start of both days, but it worked out in the end. I didn't really make any mistakes.''

In finishing second, Albergoni equalled his best result of the season although was again unable to beat Salminen following two mistakes on the extreme test. Third was Alessandro Belometti who finished in seventh on day one when his bike refused to start for over one minute after he stalled on one of the MX tests.
