THIS year's ACU British Trials Championships for Women and Girls got off to a cracking start at the Moorlands Ladies Trial organised by the Cheadle (Staffs) Auto Club at their venue at Sharpcliffe Hall, set in the picturesque heart of the Staffordshire Moorlands.
The club had set out a demanding 12-section course in and around the massive rocks at Sharpcliffe, which had to be ridden three times by the excellent entry of 31 riders.
The Adult Women's championship class was true to form and developed into a battle between Becky Cook and Donna Fox with Becky taking an early lead on lap one, dropping only two to Donna's nine, which included a five on the tricky rocks of section six. Lap two was more even, Becky increased the lead by lapping for three and Donna made four, however Donna fought back on the final circuit losing only two dabs against Becky's five but to no avail. Becky took the victory on 10 from Donna's 15. Emma Bristow took third place on 44 with Katy Sunter fourth on 67 despite injuring her hand on the first lap. Fifth was Saskia Baxter from the Isle of Man on 90.
Joanne Coles scored a convincing victory in the Youth A Championship class losing 20 to Hannah Styles' 48 with these two followed by Harriet Peacock and Katy Bullock. A very fine ride by all of the youngsters, who rode the same very difficult championship course as the adults.
The Youth B Champion-ship was closely contested with the top place finally going to Danielle Whitham, who was only one mark ahead of fellow Yorkie Chloe Richardson. Danielle took an early lead, dropping eight on the opening circuit to Chloe's 13. The next lap saw both girls on 12 but on the final loop, Chloe fought back losing eight to Danielle's 12 but was just one mark short of victory.
The Youth C championship, staged over an easier route, was the closest fought of the day with
Nikita Smith and Hannah Richardson both losing a very creditable five marks. Nikita took the win by virtue of having one more clean than Hannah.
Emma Morphett won the Women's Intermediate class on 29, from Nikki Wraight and Louise Cannom.
Robyn Anderson was the clear winner of the Youth A Intermediate, well ahead of Emma Colwell and Harriet Shores. The weather was kind to the competitors with a cold breeze for most of the day followed by some sunshine, in sharp contrast to the rain and hails of previous days. The Sharpcliffe rocks gave all the ladies a very difficult and demanding ride and all are to be congratulated on finishing the course.
