WITH the Lochaber club having got the Colin Appleyard sponsored 2008 ACU British Trials Championship off to a tough but well-received start in Kinlochleven, Scotland, last Sunday, the series moves immediately to Wales this weekend when the Neath Motor Cycle Club will stage Round Two at Lety Rafel Farm, Arwed, Aberdulais, on Sunday. The Neath club has many years of experience promoting British Championship events for the ACU and the three lap course at Lety Rafel Farm, featuring 12 observed sections, will be laid out by clerk of course James Lamin and Deputy Rob Berry and Assistant Steve Maclean.
The overall time allowance for competitors will be five hours 30 minutes to complete the course with two and a half hours of this allowed for the opening lap. Competitors will be allowed just one minute 30 seconds to complete each observed section.
Last Sunday at Kinlochleven, 20 year-old Scarborough electrician Michael Brown won the opening round in the series, on a dramatic final lap from Leeds professional rider James Dabill, the latter snatching defeat from the very jaws of victory after holding a 20 mark lead after two laps, and Preston electrician Shaun Morris who is returning rapidly to form following an eye injury. Reigning champion Graham Jarvis was fourth and will surely be looking to better this result in the valleys. One extra rider boosts the Championship class on Sunday and that is Sam Connor who will make one of his infrequent although most welcome Championship appearances.
The Expert class is as competitive as ever and it was Jack Challoner, just 17, who won the category last weekend, from reigning champ Lynton's Joe Baker and Wetherby golf course constructor Ben Hemingway. It was a superb result for Jack, mounted on his factory 125 Beta, to beat all the bigger capacity bikes and just shows the huge potential in the Halifax youngster.
Neath contender Gary Jenkins finished in 12th place and scored four championship points in what was one of the toughest championship trials of the decade. Gary will naturally be looking for a good result on home ground.
The usual suspects will be lining-up to challenge for podium placings including Dan Thorpe, Liam Walker, James Fry, Chris Pearson and Matthew Jones while the ever-cheerful Donna Fox will be looking to give the boys a run for their money.
In the non-championship Youth class, Sherco duo Jonny Walker and Jon Richardson will ne renewing a battle that saw just a single point separate them last Sunday in Walker's favour.
Kick-off time on Sunday is 10am while there will be a practise session on Saturday from 3 until 5pm.
