2011 Over 40s RHL Weston Beach Race winner talks us through his race

The RHL Beach Race at Weston-Super-Mare is famous for being one of the toughest three hours any man, woman and machine can undertake, with thousands of riders battling it out for glory around the demanding dune course.

As usual the recently staged 2011 Weston catered for a huge range of abilities from local Novices to World Champions who lined-up on the gate and a great range of ages also raced for Weston glory, including this year's Over 40 winner Darren Scott from Galashiels in Scotland.

Darren talks us through his race this year, which was an impressive 18th consecutive race entry for him since first riding in 1993.

Said Darren, "For me Weston is the best race of the year. I first raced it in 1993 and I will definitely be back in 2012 to continue this run; in fact it would be interesting to see if I have the most back-to-back Weston appearances. Over the years I've gone from being the not-so-serious Clubman, while enjoying the party and nightlife atmosphere of the race, to an accomplished beach racer. My highlights have been winning the Suzuki Cup three times for being the first privateer Suzuki finisher, having the opportunity to pass three World Champions - Stefan Everts, Tyla Rattray and Steve Ramon, being the top Scottish finisher on numerous occasions and having attained two top 12 finishes.”

"In this year's race I got a mediocre start and on the first lap I had too many stupid falls. My two pit-stop strategy went out of the window, as I had to stop for new gloves a few times due to falling into the wet. I also lost the back brake after 45 minutes and rode it that way to finish 27th – a full two laps ahead of second place in the over 40s, which is a great achievement. It's been a good year and next season I'll be competing in the Veterans British Championship, select Scottish championship races and of course both the RHL Beach Races at Swansea and Weston,”
concluded the Scottish racer.

Congratulations to Darren on his Over 40 win in a class which is increasing in size every year, and all at RHL look forward to seeing him in 2012. The RHL Beach Races attract both serious and fun riders each year, with the next event taking place in Swansea on the weekend March 2 -4.
