THE National Youth motocross season bursts into life this weekend, March 28/29, as the nation's elite young riders cross the Irish Sea and line-up at the superb Desertmartin circuit for round one of the Moggstar BYMX Championship. The Irish circuit will provide the fantastic platform for the opening encounter of a championship that is set to be one of the most competitive in recent years, and some scintilating racing can be expected across the board.
The ACU has rung the changes to the championship format once again and out goes the two class 125cc only Inter and 250F Premier class format in favour of one Open class, and the result is a seriously stacked group from which a prospective champion will emerge.
There are plenty of standout names in the class but the most obvious name is Scott Elderfield who is fresh off the back of a win in the MYX2 class at the Maxxis series and an amazing ride in the full MX1 class at Canada Heights last weekend.
Looking to stop him though will be Mel Pocock, reigning Big-wheel 85cc champ Sam Davis, Team Green trio Josh Waterman, Scot James and Conor Walkley along with the likes of Edward Allingham, Joe Gregory, James Hutchinson, Josh Spinks, David Games, Lewis Tombs, Will Worden and Lewis Trickett.
That is one seriously classy field and the racing they produce will no doubt be of the highest order.
The Big-wheel 85cc class too is not short of talent and with most of last year's front-runners moving onwards and upwards new stars will come to light. Expect the likes of Luke Hawkins, Dan Hutchinson, Bradley Banks, Bradley Pocock, Jamie McCanney, Luke Norris, Dan Thornhill, Scott Aldridge and Paul Coates to figure in the results come the end of the weekend.
Hawkins PAR team-mate Ben Howell will be expected to figure in the Small-wheel 85cc division, as will current Junior 65cc champ Ben Watson, Michael Eccles, Callan Cooper, Liam Knight, Chubbie Hammond, James Dunn and Liam Garland.
The Junior 65cc class provides the stepping stone for so many young talents on their way to future glories and names to watch out for around the top of the results table, and for future reference include Ben Green, Stuart Simpson, Ryan Johnson, Jack Wilson, Ryan Snaith and Alfie Bowtell.
