THE second new GP venue on home soil will be brought to life this weekend as the famous Fairyhouse Racecourse near Dublin ditches the horses in favour of horsepower and GP motocross when the 14th round of the 2008 World Motocross Championship rolls into its grandstands.
After the demise of the widely criticised venue for last years Irish GP at Moneyglass, Northern Ireland, the south of Ireland has taken up the challenge of hosting the worlds elite and a brand new circuit inside the confines of the world renowned steeplechase course has been designed and constructed for the occasion.
Details on the track and the whole GP itself have been scant, and the recent run of appaling weather cannot have helped the organising team on the run in to the biggest weekend in the Irish off-road calendar, but a cracking GP is expected and the fans are sure to be treated to a superd days racing as Tommy Searle tries to wrestle the MX2 title from the grasp of Red Bull KTM team-mate Tyla Rattray and the fiercely contested MX1 title race hopefully picks up where it left off.
Irish hopes of a good result have been boosted significantly also by the announcement that national hero Gordon Crockard will compete in front of his home crowd one more time as he continues his series of races in the UK during the summer break of the GNCC championship.
Crockard, who will be racing in his first MXGP since Namur last August, will again be mounted on a PAR Honda 450F in the MX1 class and after an impressive second place in the second MX1 moto at the recent Maxxis British Championship at Brampton last Sunday, the former GP winner could well suprise a few GP regulars, especially if it is wet.
Crockard will be joined by four more Irish wild-cards; Wayne Garrett, Graeme Irwin, Stuart Edmonds, and Ross Brown, who will all be hoping to make the main event on Sunday in front of the home crowd.
It's not too late to hop onto a plane ort ferry and get yourselves over to Ireland for the weekend and take in action, and more all the information you could need on the event visit the Irish GP website www.irishmxgp.ie.
