Jake Nicholls raced on Monday of this week in the penultimate round of the Dutch national series at Axel and recorded a superb second overall in the gnarly sand to inevitable double-winner, Jeffrey Herlings.

The Dutch teenager, already leading by 76 points at the start of the day, clinched the title in the first moto with a runaway win.

Herlings also won race two despite being stuck in fourth gear from mid-moto after bending the shift lever.

Second overall after a 5-2 day, Nicholls has moved up to third in the standings and goes to the finale in October just 12 points shy of JM Nestaan KTM team-mate Glenn Coldenhoff in the tussle for silver.

There was plenty of drama in the MX1 opener, as Ken De Dycker and Evgeny Bobryshev were both initially excluded for jumping under the yellow flag after finishing 1-2.

This was later revised to a one minute penalty.

There was little joy for Marc De Reuver – the Lanes Kawasaki rider was seventh in race one and crashed out of race two.
