THE stunning hillside track at St Harmon, just outside Rhayader, Mid-Wales, will reverberate to the sound of thundering four-strokes and crisp two-smokers once again this coming Wednesday evening, May 28, when the long awaited first round of the PAR Homes/ Baches Bargains sponsored Welsh Open Motocross Championship takes place.Always a cracking night out for the fans and riders alike, the Rhayader clubs mid-week series is one of the most enjoyable and popular on the British calendar and once again this year there's a brilliant national calibre entry taking part, led by local favourite Mark Jones as well as ARB Kawasaki team-mate Jamie Lewis. Also staring in this fantastic line-up are Mark Hucklebridge and Ashley Greedy who will hoping to field a strong challenge in front of the large crowd at the Cwmythig Hill circuit and hoping to earn some of the BIG prize money on offer. Also hoping to make the trip down are last year's series winner and Rhayader legend Brad Anderson and Rob Hooper's Relentless Suzuki team riders.
Club members have been busy improving the spectacular track, which includes a downhill ski jump, wall of death berm and the infamous 65ft finish line table top jump as well as a new whoops section.
With practice at 5.45pm and the first race getting off the line at 6.45pm there's a slickly run 11-race programme on offer with three races per group; Expert, Senior/ Junior and Novice/ Local Beginner, as well as two Grand Final ‘dash for cash' races at the end of the evening for the top 125/ 250F and Open Experts on the night.
The circuit, virtually the whole of which can be seen from any one vantage point, also has a full trackside public address system, and keeping the large crowds informed (4,000 spectators turned out for the first round last year) will infamous motocross commentator Kenny Kay.
As well as the ten races, there's kids' mini quad rides, numerous bouncy castles, good catering facilities (with amazing lamb burgers - ed), licensed bar, a tarmac drive into the circuit with excellent hard parking and permanent toilets – everything, in fact, for the family to enjoy a good nights entertainment.
Entry fee is just £5 for adults while children Under 14 free, and Cwmythig Hill will be well signposted from Rhayader town centre.
