Colunists

TWO worlds collided on Saturday as Motocross met X-Country in the opening round of the Moto-X Country series, organised by Paul Edmondson and Steve Ireland, at Boreton Farm, near Shrewsbury.Riders with long memories will shudder with dread when they remember the opening round of this season's Putoline XC Championship, which was also held at Boreton Farm, but this event was in a different location at a different time of year and the ground was absolutely perfect. Even the sun came out to play, warming up a cold day on occasions. Nearly 200 riders turned out for this opening round of three events in what was basically a flat cornfield, the term Stubble-Cross suited it perfectly. What this event did have to offer was a manageable course and two hours of bike time in a competitive atmosphere which added up to great value for money.
The event was split into two classes, Motocross Expert, Enduro Expert and Clubman riders raced for the opening one-hour race then Motocross Senior and Junior riders combined with Enduro Sportsman and Novice competitors rode for the second race followed by the Experts for the third race then the Senior and Clubman completed the day in the final race. One-hour racing with a one hour break in between – great stamina training for the motocrossers and good speed training for the Enduro boys.
Rising motocross star, Matt Moffatt, took to the line in the first race on Fast Eddy's Relentless Suzuki but he had stiff opposition in the form of Jason Thomas, fresh back from his GNCC exploits, and James Jackman who had made the long trip North for some quality bike time.
Moffatt led from the start but ‘Ratboy' Thomas put the pressure on and was very fast until his bike gave up after four laps, leaving Moffatt way ahead of the field. Jack Twentyman held up the Enduro side of things and pushed hard to catch Moffatt, narrowing the gap to just over one minute by the finish. Geoff Hunt and Jamie Robinson were not far from the leaders, all four front-runners on 11 laps, followed by scores of Enduro riders on ten laps and a solitary Rob Rack for the motocross fraternity also on ten laps.
Luke Smith, Kev Sandland and Sean O'Neill topped the Clubman Enduro class. Jackman's long journey had been in vain as his bike lost all compression after eight laps.
For those just wanting a fun outing, there was a Fun class but they definitely took it seriously as Jamie Price and Chris Hamer charged to the line with only a couple of seconds between them after ten laps. Price just took the win.
