No-stop goes with the flow

WITH the debate raging once again over the Stop/ No-stop rules, last weekend's Lakes Two-Day National Trial was an excellent barometer for how things could look as the organisers elected to run under No-stop rules this year. Not all Lakes committee members were for the change but agreed to the concept.

The idea was basically that simpler sections could be set, more riders would ride the proper National course instead of opting for the Clubman route and that it would make for a faster moving, more interesting enjoyable event for all.

Lakes member and former winner Nigel Birkett, who rode the National course, gave an overall view: I think it went pretty well for a first time effort. We had a few hiccups but mainly it went well and we learnt a lot. We set out more straighforward sections and it was good that the top riders in particular really tackled them in No-stop style. I didn't hear many complaints so we can definitely build on this.

Yes, we fell into the old trap of tight turns and big steps in the final groups on Sunday, which actually plays into the hands of the top riders at the expense of the bulk of the entry but we can put this right.
