JAMES Stones, 11-year-old T+MX Youth trials tester, snatched victory at Cogden Hall, Grinton, on Saturday with a controlled, aggressive ride through Richmond Motor Club's no-nonsense sections. For the local lad, the sections, half of which were in Grinton Beck, suited his riding style, which is usually the second half of the Gas Gas throttle range.
James' first punch card delivered the knockout blow with a mere 14 marks, and that took in a header up Grinton Ghyll in the sixth, the fast flowing streambed. That stream concealed holes, and submerged rocks.
Wallsend's Billy Bolt came up with a 24 on his Beta then Bro Cader front-runner Iwan Roberts on a heady 31. That was just too much for 12 year-old Iwan to pull back. Iwan went into Richmond just a point ahead of Billy Bolt and the latter never slackened his attack, on all three laps. Stones threw in another marker on lap two with a strong 10, seven under Billy who responded with 16 on the final tour.
Roberts recovered from his poor opener with 15 on lap two but his eyes were on the clock and the third lap yielded a 25 after a cursory glance at the sections while his mother Mo kept track of the time that was running out rapidly.
Triangle Meadow saw two sections which opened up the betting, Grinton Ghyll housed the next five sections then it was up into Grinton Wood for the next quartet where the dry pine droppings concealed an icy surface which came into play on laps two and three. The grassy climb from the Ghyll to the wood was dropped as David felt that the gradient on wet grass would pose a problem for the Class D boys.
