Steve and Ian tame the dirty Dyfed dirt
By TMX Archives on 18th May 07

AFTER hopefully picking a decent day for their Brechfa Enduro event on Sunday, Dyfed Dirt Bike Club had to suffer the wettest day of the year so far as a huge solo and excellent Sidecar entry turned up at the start and were well and truly soaked before the event got underway.
Running as round one of the British Sidecar Enduro Championships, 11 Expert and 12 Clubman crews entered but, at the end of an appalling day when the Expert course was cut down to two special tests, and the Clubmen one, only two Expert and three Clubmen partnerships crossed the finish line, and all lost time on the road.
Best of the Experts, current champions Steve and Ian Barnett easily won both tests, and dropped four minutes in time penalties as runners-up Graham Jones and Simon Brown were 24 minutes late, after a troublesome second test.
The best of the Clubmen, Richard and Nigel Smith scooped maximum points, two minutes late after their one required test, as Chris Mallaber and Graham McPhee, who won their special, easily lost five minutes in road penalties and lost out to the Smith brothers by seven seconds, but still far ahead of Phil and son, Matt Sparkes. The rest of the entry had to pull out with mechanical problems or gave up in the dreadful conditions, but no one blamed the superb course.
The Non-championship entry included 38 Experts who used the event to impress the British ISDE team manager who is using selected events before picking his teams for Chile later in the year and, as expected, even in the atrocious conditions, fast times were recorded through their three special tests.
