AFTER working on the idea for 12 months, the ACU is pleased to announce that four of the rounds of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship will cater for a Youth class in 2007.

The races will be for invited riders between the ages of 14 and 17 on January 1, which means they will be basically riders who compete in the Premier and Intermediate classes of the ACU's BYMX championships.

The new class will be known as the MXY2 Youth and invitations have already gone out to the top 25 point scorers in this year's Premier class and the top 10 from the Intermediate Class.

The four chosen events kick off at Landrake on March 25, followed by Langrish on June 3, Brampton on August 12 and the final round will be at Howton Court on September 15.

The ACU has taken care not to clash any of these events with rounds of its BYMX Championship.

The motorcycle industry has been consulted with the idea and has agreed the races will play a major part in identifying future stars that deserve backing. All of the main importers are present at the rounds so this will be the perfect showcase for the Youths to impress team principals.

Series Manager Brian Higgins commented: " We have worked hard to introduce the Youth riders into an environment where they can really show their skills on high profile tracks in front of a large audience. We have followed the format of the MX1 and MX2 races as closely as we can and I am sure the riders will benefit from being part of the high profile series.

"They will be in the same paddock as the top teams, therefore rubbing shoulders with Stephen Sword, Mike Brown, Carl Nunn and a handful of continental GP riders.”

Riders who have not been invited, but feel they have the required standard should contact the ACU indicating their achievements over the past two seasons. This needs to be in writing or by e-mailing sonia.goggin@acu.org.uk
