Motocross

COME rain or shine motocross is hard on the body for all concerned, but add sleet, hail, sun, more hail, more sun and freezing winds, and it really becomes tough, so tough in fact that my little sausage fingers nearly froze to my camera. But was it worth it?

Too right, especially the excitement in the final Pro Open race, more of that later.

Ken Winstanley and his Wulfsport British MastersMotocross team put the opening event of its championship year at theultra quick Culham Moto Park, near Abingdon, with a whole host of MXsuperstars on show including the revitalised Gordon Crockard, BradAnderson, wee Shaun Simpson and what seemed like every Suzuki rider onthe planet turning up to do the business and hoping to walk away withthe substantial prize money on offer.

After an amazing British Championship opener atCanada Heights the previous weekend, Wulfsport Kawasaki's Shaun Simpsonfollowed up with a cool headed overall victory at the freezing Culham.

Shaun had to battle hard in race one to get past Fork Rent Suzuki-mounted Jake Nicholls though.

Lap after lap the two teenage MX2 stars bashed'bars until Shaun finally broke the determined effort of Nicholls tosecure second. This paved the way for Simpson to chase down the leader,Nicholls team-mate Jason Dougan, but it was to no avail as Douganlooked comfortable out front and rode a masterly race to take victoryin moto one.
