A touch of Fross

Motocross

It was doubles day for KTMs Ken Roczen (MX2) and Yamahas Steven Frossard (MX1) at a gnarly Uddevalla, Sweden, on Sunday as Brit Tommy Searle saw his MX2 title hopes dealt a severe blow and KTMs reigning World Champion Toni Cairoli took over the MX1 red plate from a battered Clement.

Desalle – the French ace still suffering the after effects of a big crash he incurred while testing last week. Max Anstie was the top Brit in Sweden as he rebounded from recent setbacks to clinch fourth on the day, but Searle, Jake Nicholls and Shaun Simpson only had a single score each and the Dixon duo of Arnaud Tonus and Zach Osborne played catch-up all day.

MX1 CLASS

The MX1 opener was a knockabout affair!

Cairoli was expecting to exploit Desalle's problems, but it was the Italian, who had to chase from the opening lap.

"I was second but I didn't expect Rui (Goncalves) to go in so tight at the next turn,” he said but he braked really hard at the next turn.

"I braked too hard and the front wheel slipped away. A lot of riders hit me and I was lucky not to get hurt.

"I was dead last when I got up and the clutch lever was broken.”

But in typical Cairoli style he stormed through to fifth by the finish, the most vital overtake coming on lap 14 when he made a hard pass on Desalle, shrugging it off later with the words: "It was only like what he does to me all the time.”

The red plate was now Cairoli's and he further extended his lead in race two. But a new challenge is now on the horizon in the shape of Frossard.

Having recorded his first GP win at Uddevalla in MX2 last year, the Frenchman simply sat behind Evgeny Bobryshev for 35-minutes of the opening race before forcing the pace. The Russian admitted: "There was nothing I could do about it!

"Frossard was riding two seconds a lap faster than me at that stage of the race.”

It was the same story in race two as Cairoli tried to hang on to the flying Yamaha.

"I was pushing to stay with him, but he was just too strong today,” he admitted.

Shaun Simpson was again out of luck. He was holding a solid 12th in the first race until the water pumpwas damaged in a collision with Guarneri.

The Honda-mounted Scot was 16th in race two, while Alfie Smith earned full marks for effort but no points on the outpaced Aprilia twin.
