ACU British Sidecarcross Championship - Rd3, Canada Heights

Canada Heights in Kent hosted the third round of the ACU British Sidecarcross Championship, with blue skies and sunshine the order of the day. One of the most technically demanding circuits in Britain, Canada Heights was sure to test the crews to their limits, and a decent-sized crowd turned out to see the action.

Fresh from a podium appearance at the British GP, Brett Wilkinson/Joe Millard were full of confidence and, as the gate dropped for race one, fired into an early lead, with George and Jim Kinge second and Mike Hodges/Ryan Henderson third. However, a nasty crash for Ashlie Williams/Jak Watson on lap one meant that the red flags had to come out on safety grounds. Ashlie and Jak were OK (although admittedly, Jak still has every right to be smarting about being called Jak Taylor in the initial draft of TMX’s GP coverage), and although they had to sit out the re-run, they made it back on track for race two.
When the gate dropped for the second running of race one, Wilkinson/Millard grabbed another holeshot ahead of the Kinge pairing, with Stuart Brown/Scott Grahame getting away better in third ahead of Jack Rogers/Ryan Beavis. The Kinges dropped out of the running almost immediately, as passenger Jim jarred his leg on a heavy landing and couldn’t continue. Hodges/Henderson, meanwhile, charged up to third place and gave chase to the lead pair.

Sam Osbaldiston/Thomas Mackay moved into fourth, but Neil Campbell/Paul Horton were on the charge and took the position from them at the midway point.
The UK’s top three sidecarcross teams continued to lead the way, but they had all become quite spread out, with Wilkinson/Millard 37 seconds clear of Brown/Grahame at the finish, and Hodges/Henderson another 25 seconds back. They had almost a minute's advantage over the fourth-placed crew, with only Osbaldiston/Mackay and Rogers/Beavis also staying on the lead lap.
Race two was total domination from Wilkinson/Millard, who took the early lead and then raced away from the pack at an alarming rate, running consistently seconds quicker than all the other crews to end up with a winning margin of over a minute after 12 torturous laps in the summer sun. Brown/Grahame displaced the fast-starting Campbell/Horton team to secure second early on, with Hodges/Henderson following them through a lap later. However, the (un)lucky #13 crew suffered a technical issue that left them sidelined and cost them big points for the second time this year, leaving Campbell/Horton a safe third ahead of Osbaldiston/Mackay.

Rogers/Beavis made a stirring ride through the pack to secure fifth at the finish, with Stephen and Harley Mudie ecstatic to place sixth ahead of Luke Banks/Jon Hunt, who also charged through the field from outside the top 10.
With two wins, Wilkinson/Millard secured the overall ahead of Brown/Grahame and Campbell/Horton. The Expert class was won overall by Banks/Hunt, ahead of Mudie/Mudie and Olly Peters/Reece Kirwin.
