Ahead of the 'field...

TOP class presentation and an expertly-prepared track combined with eventual overall victories for home club riders Lee Dunham and Elliot Barrs meant that Sunday's latest round of the AMCA MX Championships at Nympsfield was just about the perfect day for the organising Dursley MXC. In MX2, current leader Dunham was again in simply majestic form, posting a very strong 1-2-1 scorecard and in the process increased his title chase advantage to 68-points over reigning champion, Phil Mercer.
Over in MX1, after enduring another season badly interrupted by injuries, Elliot Barrs produced a stunning championship comeback with a 1-3-4 card and earned a very richly deserved overall victory.
At the top of the AMCA MX1 table it's still Brad O'Leary who leads although his advantage has been reduced to just 23-points after he suffered a rather painful day, which included a very heavy crash in moto one. With just two round remaining, the MX1 title chase now looks as if it may go right down to the wire as just 53-points separates the top four of O'Leary, Charlie Hollis, Ben Saunders and reigning champion, David Campbell.
Indeed there was drama right from the off in Sunday's MX1 Championship action as Jamie Powell fell in turn one. Then the top two in the title chase – O'Leary and Saunders – were involved in a high-speed collision. As the points hungry pack lined up their first attack of the Nympsfield hill, O'Leary and Saunders touched and crashed. Remarkably they were avoided by virtually the entire field.
Immediately, Saunders race was run, with a broken radiator, although O'Leary, despite being badly bruised, bravely continued in an attempt to still get some vital points on the board.
At the front, Alan Pearce grabbed the holeshot before being passed by both James Russell and Elliot Barrs. For the next five-laps, an impressive Russell led the way before Barrs, much to the delight of the home crowd, took control to earn a very popular win, with Russell maintaining a safe second ahead of Campbell, Brad Turner, Tim Truman, Danny Blakeley. Charlie Hollis brilliantly charged back from an early 28th spot to eighth.
