A bed of Rose's for South Eastern lads

LAST year, it was a long trip to the north east for many competitors in the Inter Centre Team Trial, but this year it was the very opposite with the cream of the country's riders heading south west for Rosewall Hill, near St Ives in Cornwall, just five-miles from Penzance. This is an absolutely wonderful location with fantastic sections set high above the English Riviera coastline. It features spectacular views over St Ives and the north Cornwall coastline. At least that's what the organisers told us unfortunately the rain-soaked riders, observers and spectators could barely see 50-yards at times, as low clouds and mist covered the area. The South Eastern Team headed by Sam Connor along with Ben Morphett, James Fry, Ben Wibberly and Simon Bird were in determined mood to regain the Trophy they were forced to hand back to the Yorkshire lads in Northumberland last year and they went on to absolutely annihilate the opposition, losing a mere 56 marks, which was just over half the score of the runners-up.
The East Yorkshire team of Ian Austermuhle, Andrew Chilton, Guy Kendrew, James Carr and Thomas Hick were actually first away and this team was to go on to claim second place, beating their Yorkshire neighbours and rivals by virtue of the tie-decider, with both teams having finished on 107 marks.
The 20 sections consisted mainly of large grippy boulders, left over from the old tin mines, but from the outset, teams were concentrating as much on the clock as they were on the hazards. With some riders taking as long as four minutes to ride a section, queues inevitably built up and 20 minutes was the delay in a number of cases.
With some teams electing to take fives and move on, the problem was compounded for those that didn't as they arrived at the next section, having lost their running order in the trial. With most teams taking well over four hours for the first lap, the organisers altered a number of the longer sections but over half still lost marks on time.
YOUTH
THE Cornwall Centre hosted this year's Inter Centre Team Trial, held on Rosewall Hill, near St Ives, with 18 Youth squads getting the show underway on Saturday, along with a further three teams of girls.
The Yorkshire Centre has some real class acts at the moment and they were head and shoulders above the rest in an event where just three teams were in on time and a further three were excluded after going over their limits. This was a shame as otherwise excellent sections were just a bit too long resulting in lengthy queues and marks were sacrificed in the mad rush to get in on time.
Yorkshire's Richard Sadler and Josh Maude were best A class individual scorers in the event and were ably assisted by C class top dog Jack Price, along with Jack Stones and Matt Whelan.
