Middle'man Manton

THIS year's Nostalgia Scramble, hosted by Kendal Classic MCC and sponsored by Triumph Cumbria, was unfortunately a victim of the forecast bad weather. After the glorious sunshine for the trial the previous day, the rain came down almost incessantly until the meeting had to be abandoned after two races out of three for each class. This was on the grounds of safety for the riders, to protect the land from any further damage and to allow time for all the vehicles to be cleared from the, by then, extremely muddy field. However, prior to this, the huge entry had continued to circulate the superb Nostalgia track at Middleton, near Sedbergh, at an only slightly reduced pace and put on some excellent and incident-packed racing for the large number of spectators. First up were the heavyweight Pre-60 ma-chines that, despite the conditions, provided quite a spectacle as the Triumph Twins and BSA singles brought back the memories of 1950s scrambles with such wonderful sounds.
However, it was a rare BSA Twin that took victory with big Pete Hollinshead on board after backing-up his first race second behind Rob Griffiths with a win in race two as Griffiths struggled to fourth place. Some quick but steady riding netted Andy Carter a well-deserved third overall.
The CCM race was dominated by the pre-race favourites of Richard Charlton, Keith Barnes and Gary Parker who finished in that order but it might have been different if Parker, on Denis Rawcliffe's 1974 model, had got a better start.
Last year's ‘Man of the Meeting', Tim Dallaway, just had the edge over Andy Camm in the Pre-65 Up to 350cc class as these two finished first and second in both races while slow-starting Roger Dunford pulled through to third each time.
The larger capacity Pre-65 class saw Tim Manton just keep ahead of his great rival Terry Challinor with their battles of last year never quite materialising. John Nicholls finished a fine third ahead
of fancied runner Paul Evans while young Lewis Bell from Edinburgh took an excellent third in the second race.
