THE Bath Classic club were entrusted with the second round of The Classic MotorCycle magazine's 2007 Classic British Scramble Championship in aid of the Dorothy House Hospice, at its well established Yatton Keynell course, last weekend.

The problems encountered last year with a lastminute switch to the dusty Upavon AMCA circuit were well and truly putto rest with a fine day's racing on a course in prime condition afterrain earlier in the week. With not one stoppage for incidents orinjuries the full 24-race programme was completed in just over fivehours, a tribute to Steve Salmon and his team.

Racing got under way just on midday with a WorkersRace with Malcolm Sims, David Hoskins and Steve Salmon charging off atthe head of the field with Nigel Andrews, Paul Andrews and Jed White inhot pursuit.

Race two was the first of two British ClassicScramble Championship legs and with the leader after the first round inNorth Devon, Guy Winsor, not present all eyes were on Andy Roberton andthe rest to establish a new leader by the end of the day.

Championship favourite Roberton never put a wheelwrong and charged off into the lead in race one, with main challengerCarl Pope in close pursuit.

Carl maintained station a few bike lengths behindfor about two thirds of the 15-minute plus one lap Championship lengthrace, the two of them well clear. Adrian Cox still only has a 350ccCheney BSA but he did well to maintain third ahead of Dave Bell (AB 500Jawa Metisse) whom he passed, and Paul Evans who continues to performwell on his Cheney Jawa, leading the race off the start line.

James Newstead, from Diss, who only joined theclassic scene last year, enjoyed a top six finish in race one. DaveBell finished fourth in this one to maintain his Championship hopes andwas destined to repeat this in race two, prior to primary chain andclutch problems later in the meeting. In, for him, a lowly eighth spotwas Shaun Lovegrove but it was later discovered that his Cheney BSA hada suspect oil ring.
