This weekend September 10/11 sees Landrake Moto Parc host the final round of the 2022 Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels. Its been quite a year for the UKs official national motocross championship and although a couple of champions have been crowned, the majority are still wide open.
After seven rounds and 14 championship motos, the battle to claim the MX1 title boils down to a two-man scrap between defending champion Tommy Searle (Crendon Fastrack Honda) and Harri Kullas (CAB Screens Crescent Yamaha) with just 15 points separating the pair.
The battle has raged all season with Searle winning eight motos to Kullas five with former champ Shaun Simpson (SS24 KTM) stealing the other. As things stand, Searle only needs to run 4-5 at Landrake on Sunday to clinch the title and thats if Kullas wins both races something hes not managed to do in this championship this year.
Behind them, Simpson sits a fairly safe third with local hero Josh Gilbert (SC Sporthomes Husqvarna) in fourth, 30 points behind Simpson and 51 clear of fifth-placed John Adamson (ASA United GASGAS).
The big scrap is for sixth with Gabriel KTM teammates Brad Todd and Liam Knight tied on 159 points with Apico Husqvarnas Martin Barr just six behind. Its all to play for in Landrake.
After securing the MX2 title in Whitby, Conrad Mewse (426 Motorsports Stebbings KTM) will also compete in MX1 meaning the fight for MX2 honours will be wide open.
GRT Impact KTMs Jamie Carpenter looks like a safe bet to secure the silver medal so the focus is on the battle for third between Tom Grimshaw (Chambers Racing GASGAS) and two-stroke evangelist Jamie Law (Apico Husqvarna). Seven points separate the pair with two motos left to run.
The man most likely to take the win on the day is Revo Kawasakis Dylan Walsh who has had a British season to forget after a strong start to his year in AMA SX action. Walsh took a moto win last time out at Whitby and willing be wanting to end his year on a high.
Tyler Westcott (HJA Motorcycles KTM) has dominated the 250cc Youth class throughout the year and has a safe lead in the championship of 57 points over Team Greens Jak Taylor. A battle for third between Domonic Newbury (Motoxtreme GASGAS) and Hudson Roper (Team Green Kawasaki) will be settled in Cornwall Newbury has a seven-point lead with four motos remaining.
With the cancellation of the penultimate round of the series, Charlie Heyman was crowned 125cc Youth champ without turning a wheel. The SJP Moto rider has been in awesome form all season and is a very worthy champion. Ollie Colmer (GRT Impact KTM) sits second, 21 points ahead of third-placed Cole McCullough (Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee). The Ulstermans bronze medal is far from secure though with Ben Mustoe (MGMX KTM) and Tyla Hooley (ASA United GASGAS) just five and two points behind.
The series standings seem fairly settled in the BW85 class with GRT Impact KTMs Billy Askew leading the way ahead of Josh Vail (SJP Moto Husqvarna) whos been riding really well just lately and Jake Walker on the Mr Ts GASGAS. While Askews not assured of victory, with a 60-point lead its likely hell wrap up the championship at least one moto early. It will be well deserved if he does.
The SW85 championship couldnt be much more wide open as Robbie Daly and Hayden Statt enter the final round 13 points apart. In theory, Daly could afford to follow Statt home in each moto to secure the title but thats a risky strategy, especially with riders of the calibre of Blake Ward-Clarke, Alfie Geddes-Green, Sonny Rooney and Joel Winstanley-Dawson in the line-up. Its sure to be an exciting season finale for these young racers.
Its been a short season for the 65cc class whove got just three rounds in so far with a different winner at each. Marty Spires and Casey Lister have both won four motos apiece as has wildcard Bryan Giles who dominated at FatCat and its Spires who leads the championship by 20 points heading into the final round with Arthur Moore looking a safe bet to finish third. Leo Wilson and Harley Marczak are separated by five points in their scrap for fourth having been evenly matched all year.
All the action happens at one of the UKs finest hardpack motocross tracks in the form of Landrake Moto Parc which is nestled in the beautiful Cornish countryside, a few miles to the west side of the Tamar Bridge (remember to bring some change to feed the trolls on the way out). Situated yards from the A38 which most of us will pick up from the southern end of the M5 motorway. It really couldnt be simpler to find but for those of you who like a little SatNav action then PL12 5EP is the postcode you need to put into your device of choice.
The weather forecast is looking good and everything is set to go.
