Motocross

DEAN Moor in Cumbria hosted the fourth round of the ACU Express British Youth Motocross Championship. With the track in perfect condition and the hospitality of West Cumbria MXC, this was the halfway point in the championship, and fantastic racing and a few upsets in the Small and Big-wheel classes. Congratulations to everyone at the club for all their hard work which made this meeting one of the best so far this year.Report and Pictures: BRYAN ATKINSON

RACE one of the first day saw Nathan Watson stamp his authority as he took the lead with Ryan Houghton, Luke Newman, Sam Winterburn and Jake Millward giving chase, until Houghton went out with bike problems.
Millward made his way past Newman and the chase was on to catch Watson. Watson went on to win with Millward claiming second and Newman just clinching third from a hard chasing Sunny Thompson.
Race two and Ben Howell took the lead with Watson and Houghton behind. Houghton moved into second but was taken by Watson again who got Howell at the same time and moved into the lead, Jamie McCanney and Thompson also took Howell to move into third and fourth as Watson claimed his second win.
Day Two and with three more races to get through the boys were ready to rock. Race three saw Luke Norris take the start to finish win, with Thompson second and Houghton third. Day one winner Watson was down in sixth.
Race four and Houghton took a start to finish win, with Watson second and Millward third. Race five and it could have been any of five riders who could have won but Watson went on to win, and the overall, from Thompson and Houghton.

SERIES leader Ben Watson, unbeaten this year, must have felt confident but there was a shock as Connor Clark took off in the lead, with Watson close behind. Also in the scrap were Brad Todd and Callan Cooper.
It was wheel to wheel racing when a coming together saw Watson take the lead and go on to take the win. Clark got back on and claimed second from Cooper. Race two and another upset for Watson as Matthew Callaghan got the holeshot, with Cooper on his wheel. Watson was in third battling with Todd. Cooper took the lead after getting past Callaghan and Watson followed him. Callaghan stayed third until lap five when Tom Neal took him, as did Clark. Cooper claimed the win, with Watson second and Neal third.
Day two and more upsets were on the cards for Watson, as Corrie Southwood hit the front in race three, followed by Clark, Liam Knight and Stuart Fee. The battle at the front lasted two laps as Cooper took Clark to take the win with Southwood third. Watson got back to sixth after a bad start saw him down in 19th on lap one.
Race four and Watson finally took a start to finish win, with Cooper second and Neal third, just ahead of Clark. The final race of the day was a nail biting affair. Watson went from start to finish again but Cooper had to finish second to have a chance of taking the overall. Down in fourth on lap one, he charged past Clark and Brad Todd into second and the overall win to break Watson's winning streak. Rob Davidson and Liam Knight finished third and fourth in the race, but the glory was Cooper's.

RACE one for the pocket rockets saw Conrad Mewse take yet another start to finish win, with Sid Evans trying to stay with him to finish second. Jay Hague and Aaron Piper finishing third and fourth.
Race two and Hague took the holeshot, only to come to grief and let Mewse take another win ahead of Evans. Connor Hughes showed earlier in the race but he and Piper were both taken by the rapid Henry Williams as he charged through to take third.
Day two and race three saw Mewse and Evans out front with Will Keogh in third place and Hughes fourth. Mewse was again the winner in race four, with Evans in second with Hughes ahead of Piper in fourth.
The final race of the day race five saw Evans hit the front with Mewse on his tail and a battle ensued. Mewse got into the lead on lap four and was on for another maximum but Evans took him back on lap five and took the win although Mewse took the overall.

SERIES leader Josh Waterman needed to be on his best form as his rivals were out for an upset and in race one it showed as Connor Walkley hit the front with Luke Hawkins and Connor Butler on his tail, Waterman in fourth. Hawkins took the lead and went on to take the win from Waterman and Walkley in third after battles with Danny McCanney and Jack Rowland.
Race two and Hawkins hit the front with Waterman, McCanney, Gary Sharp and Rowland. Waterman pounced and took over at the front for the win. Hawkins held on for second, McCanney third with Walkley coming home fourth.
Day two and Walkley took the lead with Ryan Mclean on his heels and Ewan McLaren and Waterman battling for third. Waterman took McLaren and Walkley to take the win after McLean dropped out.
McCanney, on a borrowed bike, took the race four win from Waterman and Walkley. The final race saw McCanney on fire after his win as he battled with Waterman all race. Waterman eventually took the win and McCanney settled for second. Waterman extended his lead in the championship, with Hawkins second from McCanney and Walkley.

THIS was the best turnout this year as local riders filled the line for this new class.
Ryan Pottenger again went away with all five race wins in the Expert class, but the Junior class was something else as local support riders and registered riders did battle all weekend long. Series leader Zac Stealey went away with the overall again, with Robert Hail second and Justin Edgar third.
