Motocross

WITH a race in hand, Kristian Whatley vlinched the 2009 ACU MMX British Open Championship at a sunny Culham Moto Parc, as his only real rival for the series, Carl Nunn was involved in a horrific multiple rider crash in race one and was carried away with a suspected broken ankle.

Meanwhile, in the PAR Homes Under 21 Championship Scott Elderfield crashed twice in the final race of the series, but still managed to become champion as his main challengers, Shane Carless and Graeme Irwin, both self destructed in one way or another.

Winrow Honda-mounted Paul Winrow had already clinched the MMX British QuadX crown at the previous round at Blaxhall, but Jason MacBeth and Paul Holmes had second and third to sort out before the end of the day.

The hill side track was in good condition and well watered at the start of racing, but the sandy surface soon cut up with big berms forming on most of the corners and whoops down most of the straights.

OPEN
In the Open class Wayne Smith and Whatley were side by side going into turn one at the start of the first Open class race, but the race was short-lived as it was stopped when Nunn and John May went down in a heap at an unsighted landing off one of the jumps. As rider after rider, despite a yellow flag being waved, came flying over the jump a pile of bodies and bikes built up causing the race to be red-flagged.

UNDER 21
Scott Elderfield got the holeshot at the start of the first Under 21 race and as the dust settled, Jack Brunel was in a heap in turn one.

On lap two Jake Nicholls had found his stride and breezed passed Elderfield and into a lead that would never be threatened, as he built up a bigger and bigger lead over the rest of the field.

Nicholls took his first win of the day by just under 16 seconds from Elderfield with Shane Carless crossing the line in third, but later being disqualified for overtaking under yellow flag conditions. Alan Keet was credited third, from eighth on the opening lap, while Luke Hawking had a great ride for fourth.

QUAD
Quad Champion Winrow got the holeshot at the start of the first  race, with Holmes in his wheel tracks and already trying to find a way passed as they went round turn one.
James Beham had a good start and was in third, with Lindsey Duke and Leon Beda following while John Mitchell was down in tenth. For lap after lap Holmes put Winrow under pressure, but the ten time Quad Motocross Champion is use to that, but while that was going on, Beda was closing in on the pair, until on lap five Holmes was through to the lead, and on lap seven, Beda was into second.
