Double Dutch

KTM devastated the opposition in the Lierop sand, in Holland, with 1-2 in each class, as double winners Toni Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings set themselves up to clinch the titles at Faenza this coming weekend.

Herlings was simply amazing, as he won each mx2 moto by two minutes and lapped everyone except Jeremy van Horebeek in the opener.

"I wanted to lap them all on race two, but they graded the entire track and made it too easy for everyone,” he said.

Consolation for the Brits came with an impressive 3-4-5 for our nations trio of Max Anstie, Tommy Searle and Jake Nicholls in moto one.

Max and Tommy repeated the positions in moto two, as Jake gritted his teeth against the discomfort of back spasms for ninth.

Max – who passed Tommy in both races – was beaming at his first podium of the year: "I got to prove that I am strong in sand today.”

Britain's wealth of talent was emphasised as Scot Shaun Simpson  took fifth in the mx1 finale, having only lost fourth in the first moto with bike troubles.

Even before the weekend the Herlings glory ride was almost an inevitability.

The cheeky teenager rode a single lap in practice to secure pole, as he rubbed in his dominance in deep sand and even disproved the belief that he can only beat himself, with an amazing qualification victory.

"I laid the bike flat over the big table top and missed the rut in the next turn,” he grinned.

"Jeremy's bike was on top of mine so I had to wait, and the bars were bent and the levers down.”

He restarted half a minute behind the back of the pack – and passed them all in 20 minutes!

Anstie was amazing as he twice came from midpack starts to pass Searle for third.

"I knew I could make the difference up (on his under powered bike) by riding smoothly.”

He was even hauling VanHorebeek in at two seconds a lap until, in his own words: "I almost hit a haybale and went down. I've been out on the 450 with Princey this week; I can't wait for Lommel.”

Searle too was inspired by the solid showing of the Brits: "I haven't spent enough time in sand yet, but after Faenza I'm going to take the camper to Belgium and ride Lommel every day for two weeks.”

Nicholls' fifth place was under threat from the Yamaha duo of Tonus and Osborne for a while. "I struggled to find my rhythm early on but after I settled down I even tried to go after Tommy,” he said.

He finished four seconds down.

Osborne could set better laps than his teammate once they broke clear of the pack, but the Swiss rider was less hectic.

"I'm over my arm-pump, but still need to get my race speed back – I concentrated on riding consistent laps,” he admitted.

Whilst Anstie and Searle avoided being lapped in race two, Nicholls had to be satisfied with ninth as he suffered with back spasms, but had the consolation of taking over fourth in the series.

Ebb's gp horror story continued as he crashed out of sixth early in race one and fried the clutch in race two.

Lierop was a fifth-consecutive gp victory for Cairoli, the fourth with maximum points, as the Sicilian played with the opposition.

Quickly through to fifth with a decisive pass on points rival Desalle, tc222 was content to play a
