AN exciting new event will be taking place in mid Wales on Sunday, August 23 the Putoline Oils Elite Sprint Enduro. Following the disappointing news that the fourth round of the '09 British Enduro Championship has been cancelled, former Championship class rider turned enduro journalist Jonty Edmunds has decided to grab the bull by the horns, and with the full backing of the ACU, run his first ever event the Putoline Oils Elite Sprint Enduro, on Sunday, August 23 at the spectacular Cwmythig Hill venue, Rhayader. Aided by an experienced team of enduro enthusiasts, Edmunds' goal is to fill the gap left by the cancellation of the Rhayader Enduro, utilise one of the country's premier venues, and bring together the UK's top enduro riders, as well as one or two newcomers to the sport. The end result is hoped to be an event that will be exciting and challenging for the riders, but equally enjoyable for spectators.
Using the superb Cwmythig Hill circuit, close to the mid Wales town of Rhayader, the Putoline Oils Elite Sprint Enduro will put an exciting new twist on one of off-road motorcycling's longest standing disciplines. High on action and close on competition, the event will pitch 60 of the UK's top riders against one another around a special test similar to that used in the recent Welsh Two Day Enduro.
Following a 20-minute practice session, a timed one-lap prologue will determine the event's starting order. All the action will take place just a few meters away from the paddock. Each rider will be timed through ten laps of the expected seven-minute special test, with the winner being the rider with the fastest combined time. To heighten excitement each lap, the fastest riders will set off at the rear of the entry.
At the end of the day a separate instant elimination race will take place. Riders will randomly be draw against each other in groups of no more than four riders per race and compete around a shortened version of the Cwmythig Hill special test.
Thanks to generous support from Putoline Oils a prize fund of 500 will be split among the top three riders in the Putoline Oils Elite Sprint Enduro.
All riders will compete in one Elite' class, with additional cash prizes awarded for a number of different categories, such as Best Under 21 and the most notable Stand Out Performance, which will be decided by the event winner.
Regs will be available from www.enduronews.com on Monday, August 10, or by e-mailing jonty.edmunds@attglobal.net
Entry fees will be 50 per rider. Riders will need an up-to-date ACU licence one-day licences will be available on the day.
