Golden Bou’s no nugget
By TMX Archives on 1st Jun 12
TONI Bou created his very own Gold Rush as the Repsol Montesa star rode to a pair of convincing World Trials Championship wins in Australia, as rounds three and four of the series went down under for the first time in its 38-year history.
The venue for the event was Mount Tarrengower, an extinct volcano near the Victorian gold mining town of Maldon, some 70 miles north west of Melbourne.
Played out in front of large crowds, the second day attendance was estimated at around 8,000 – similar to that achieved at the early Hawkstone Park World Rounds – with the organisers' only problems being getting the spectators to the sections, especially on the first day when heavy rain on Friday (a rare occurrence in the area) made the going very muddy.
The sections were composed almost entirely of huge, rounded granite boulders (no hard edges) often piled one upon the other and interspersed with tempting gaps that were pretty intimidating, even for the experienced Championship riders.
The heavy rain on Friday and more rain on Saturday morning made for a really difficult test – and while reigning champ and series leader Bou was totally dominant even he had his moment.
Bou roared right to the lip of the 15-foot vertical climb at the seventh before losing grip and cartwheeled back to the bottom, followed by his bike, and he was lucky to escape serious injury.
No-one mastered this section on the opening lap but typically, second time round Toni bagged the only clean. Of the rest, only Jeroni Fajardo on the factory Beta saw the ends cards with a superb single dab ride.
On the opening lap Bou dropped just 17 marks to lead from team-mate Takahisa Fujinami on 32. Adam Raga dropped 35 on his opening circuit and no way was he going to get that defecit back over his arch rival Bou.
As he so often does, Bou got the full measure of the section on that opening circuit and on the second circuit he took the course apart logging an incredible 12 cleans, just two ones and a lone five, on section 13 - along with everyone else. On the opening lap only one person saw the ends cards on this one. You've guessed it - Bou, for a dab!
In the end Toni won by the incredible margin of 30 marks from Raga, with Sherco's Albert Cabestany just edging a disappointed Fujinami off the podium.
