THE 85th running of the National Alan Trophy Trial, Cumberland Countys prestige event of the year, was the stage for the seventh round of the 2015 ACU S3 Parts Clubman Trials Championship and attracted a healthy entry last Sunday.

Based on the north Cumbria villages of Newbiggin and Croglin the club put together an excellent nine-mile lap on the high ground, taking in 20 varied sections including slippery streams, dry gullies and rocky outcrops with a five-and-a-half-hour time limit for two laps, a time which some of the Clubmen fell foul of although all the Championship riders had time in hand.

The majority opted to ride the Easy course, leaving just 15 to compete for the S3 points – but it was a quality entry who all worked hard at cracking a tricky test.

Guy led the event virtually from start to finish and got the edge on his travelling pal and last year's Alan winner Richard Sadler at the fourth section, in the green, greasy, climbing beck at Newbiggin, close to the start.

The hardest bit was the vertical climb out and over an awkward rock to the exit but Guy made it look like a main road, as did John Crinson.

Richard, determined to be last man through, waited and waited but in the end it was all in vain as he canme to an undignified halt early on in the stream.

"I've no idea what happened there,” declared a disappointed Sadler
