ON Sunday, in sub-zero temperatures, the 53rd running of the Vic Brittain Trial continued the tradition of the event being the season's opening National event and Gas Gas-mounted Ross Danby ended the day on top of the podium, earning a belated birthday present.

With the Bewdley Club hosting the event for the second time, the route not far from Much Wenlock followed a traditional feel around the Shropshire countryside.

The first group at Easthope Wood was run in reverse order to 2009 and with the temperature gauge at minus one you would have expected the banks and roots to polish up. However, that did not turn out to be the case and all the hazards in the group were all well rideable whether riders were at the front or back of the entry.

There were a host of cleans in both classes on the opening sub but it did catch out eventual winner Ross Danby for a dab on the downhill cambered exit. Ross who celebrated his 21st birthday just 24 hours previously was, however, soon right on top of his game.
