Motocross

KENDAL Classic MCC got its Nostalgia weekend away to a flying start with the Nostalgia Trial which was staged on Saturday at the Nostalgia headquarters at Holme Farm, Middleton, near Sedbergh. And this year, such is the popularity of the event, the club played host to a monster entry of 200-riders who tackled three-laps of an 18-section course, set mainly on the steeply-wooded slopes surrounding the start area. THE overall winner was Triumph-mounted Paul Heys from Rawtenstall, Lancashire, who led a Cub rout in the Pre-65 Unit class. Paul has enjoyed a really successful year so far since winning the Pre-65 Scottish Two Day back in May.
Paul got away to a perfect start with a nice tidy row of cleans on his punchcard which gave him a clear lead after the opening lap. This was no easy feat as many of the sections were tightly marked as they twisted uphill over rocks and roots while the bankings of the stream sections in the lower wood were extremely slippery and treacherous for both the Hard and Easy route riders and there were plenty of maximums as bikes slid down the cambers.
Heys eventually claim-ed his victory after dropping four marks overall, two on each of his last two laps.
In the Unit class it was local rider Ashley Bell who eventually finished runner-up. Ashley, third placed finisher, and BSA-mounted Dave Wood, all eased through their second circuit for the loss of a single dab.
On the final circuit, last year's winner Tony Calvert and Dave Thorpe matched the winner's two-dab effort but no-one could match the relentless consistency of Heys.
Chris Gascoigne, on his Ariel, took an unopposed win in the Springers, the only rider to manage single-figure laps – and he did three of them while Dave Emmott only just held off Duncan MacDonald for the runner-up berth.
