SOME 77 riders signed on for Lisburn and District MCC's Spring Trial, round eight of the Ulster Trails Championship, at Finnis, recently, over four laps of ten-difficult sections. Judging by the quantity of water lying on the sodden slopes of Slieve Croob, Belfast can expect high water levels in the Lagan shortly. Overnight rain merely added to the fun, making the exits from the river sections very difficult, while the mountain top remained mist shrouded for much of the day.
Organisers welcomed a late decision by Harold McQuaid to defend his Grade A win of last year. After a sluggish start that saw him languish in third place at the end of lap one, Harold pulled out all the stops to finish on 30 marks lost, five ahead of next best Sean Doyle. Harold, in fact, seemed to be heading for a clean final lap until dropping two dabs on the exit of the very last section.
