MX Diary: Simpson enjoys lucky break

Heading into Desertmartin nursing a broken hand, reigning MX1 champion Shaun Simpson (Wilvo Virus KTM) was confident he could limit any damage to his series lead.
As it turned out, with Tommy Searle's Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki going bang in the opening moto the Scot actually extended his advantage.
"I was quite positive on the way to this meeting and I thought I could get a podium easy," said Simpson, "even though I didn't ride all this week to give my hand as much time to heal as I could.
"As I rode the first lap in practice this morning I thought ‘hang on, this is much worse than I was expecting'. We switched to damage limitation mode for the rest of the day so, all things considered, we have had a great day.
"With Tommy's misfortune in the first race I managed to salvage two fourth places for third overall
and even extend my championship lead and keep the red plate going into the next round in Scotland so along with Adam [Sterry] winning both his races it's been a good day for the team."
With the series now at the halfway mark Simpson leads Searle by 21 points.
