Nagl pulls an Udda' one...
By TMX Archives on 9th Jul 09
KTM won all three classes, there were GP victories for Max Nagl and Steffi Laier, a career first GP moto win for Ken Roczen the Germanic invasion of Sweden at the weekend was an almost total success!
The battered British contingent was reduced to six natives plus Matiss Karro, but only continental debutant Graeme Irwin failed to score as the boys got stuck in with a vengeance.
The Latvian and Jake Nicholls each broke into the top ten twice, Bryan MacKenzie and Jason Dougan each put a double digit score against their name, while a battered Tom Church and a rejuvenated Mel Pocock were in the scorers each time. Even Irwin only just missed out after showing terrific fighting spirit.
MX1
Nagl's second MX1 GP victory of the summer was again built around his starts. The 21-year-old twice sped to the first turn in front, but a tremendous surge out of the 180 degree sweeper saw Toni Cairoli power past into a lead he was never to relinquish in race two. The overall went to Nagl however, the Sicilian restricted to fourth in the opener after a number of incidents.
"I got out of the gate good in the first race,” explained the series leader, "But Josh (Coppins) came across me from the left and I was sandwiched between him and David Philippaerts, so I had to close the throttle.”
It was a difficult ride back through the pack and with a huge points lead he wasn't taking chances: "This track is fast and I didn't want to take risks. I needed many laps to pass David (Philippaerts), but he was racing fast at that moment.
"I caught up to Desalle with a few laps to go, but, for me, he is one of the hardest riders to pass. You never know what to expect when you try to pass him.” It was only last week that the Belgian took Cairoli out in Latvia.
Nagl was always comfortable in race one: "I had control of the first race, but Toni got in front very quickly in race two. I tried to follow him and we pushed really hard and opened a gap. But I also saw in that race where I had to improve. Straight after the race Stefan (Everts) told me there was one corner where I was losing half-a-second every lap. I still need to learn to change my lines during the race.”
Ken De Dycker kept Nagl honest all the way in race one – "...but I was never close enough to try to pass!” – and charged hard back to fourth in race two after banging bars early on with Desalle. ‘Keeno', like Cairoli, knew he had to treat the track with respect: "I caught up to Philippaerts, but I would have had to push him to pass.”
Cairoli now leads by 53-points from Nagl, and Philippaerts is the only other rider less than 80-points down.

MX2
Down in MX2 the series opposition were all anxious to take full advantage of Marvin Musquin's absence from the gate (see separate story), but they all knew after the Saturday qualifier that Ken Roczen was the fastest man on the track.
Rui Goncalves has got the MX2 starts taped, just like Nagl in MX1, and he again surged to the front in the opener. But Roczen immediately swept past Joel Roelants on the opening lap to put the Portuguese under pressure.
After 15-minutes the German was ready to pounce: "I watched
Rui's lines and found some others to make a pass.”
Once in front, the Suzuki teenager could feel Goncalves' breath on his neck for many laps, but the KTM rider went through a minor crisis at the 25-minute mark and lost contact. He regrouped with five-laps remaining, but it was far too late to endanger the constant laps being turned out by young Kenny.
"It's just another line on my CV,” admitted the German teenager later. "It was no different to winning my first GP at Teutschenthal.”
The duel was soon decided in race two.
"I got bumped from the left at the start,” explained Roczen, "But that's racing.”

WMX
The Germans threatened to dominate again in WMX but Natalie Kane split them to make the podium. With Livi Lancelot watching – "I will have my shoulder operation on Tuesday!”, there was no-one to challenge Steffi Laier and she is now just 13-points away from securing the title, but the MVR-D girl continued to show the upturn in her form curve in the last two races: "I had a big crash at the first round in Bulgaria, but we also changed the suspension before Germany. I'm looking forward to Lierop very much.”
Her 40-point haul has lifted the Ulster girl past Elin Mann and the injured champion, and she still has an outside chance of a medal should either Papenmeier or Franke screw up at
the Dutch finale.
Alix Dunlop again scored twice, well pleased by her first moto 15th, Sophia Paull kept plugging away but missed adding to her first moto score by one place on Sunday morning, but the surprise of the day came from Kerry Wilson who battled away for a brace of 12ths on her GP
debut.
