Rattray's double Dutch
By TMX Archives on 11th Sep 08

TOMMY Searle once again gave his all, but it was not quite enough to prevent Tyla Rattray moving relentlessly towards the World MX2 title as the Red Bull KTM duo decimated the field at Lierop, in Holland, on Sunday. TOMMY Searle once again gave his all, but it was not quite enough to prevent Tyla Rattray moving relentlessly towards the World MX2 title as the Red Bull KTM duo decimated the field at Lierop, in Holland, on Sunday.
In MX1 Marc De Reuver finally won his home GP, but it was a knockabout affair, Billy MacKenzie even having to sit out the race after a local wobbler sent him to hospital on Saturday. However, the true sensation was the way Steve Ramon wilted to hand David Philippaerts a 14-point cushion going into this weekend's finale at Faenza in Italy.
The unrelenting sand was not kind to the rest of the Brits.
Shaun Simpson carved out a solid fifth overall, but dropped eight points to Nico Aubin and Rui Goncalves, his rivals for the MX2 bronze medal, and there were double score-lines for Molson team-mates Gareth Swanepoel, Stephen Sword and Tom Church. The only other UK scorer was Carl Nunn with a second moto 18th from reserve, and none of the British girls scored a single point as Livia Lancelot tied up the inaugural Ladies world title.

‘Tommy Gun' had his now usual lapse in qualification but still salvaged eighth gate pick. However the KTMs were never going to be challenged in the chase to turn one through the rotovated sand and it was rather a first lap run up an earth bank which meant the Brit had to pass Erik Eggens on lap two to join team-mates Goncalves and Rattray at the front.
Distancing the field at three-seconds a lap the trio held station for half-an-hour before Rattray made his move, dropping his lap time by a further three-seconds: "I tried to put in some fast laps, but Tommy came really close at the end.”
The Brit responded but needed another two laps to pass Goncalves and came up half-a-second short after setting the fastest lap of the race on the final circuit: "I knew Tyla would be strong today. I left it just too late.”
Simpson advanced steadily up the leader-board to snatch fourth by mid-moto as Eggens and Van Horebeek baled out, but Roelants confirmed the pace in sand which had given him a heat win on Saturday to move past a lap later, and Aubin was in inspired form. The Frenchman had fallen earlier in the race after coming to the Scot for the first time, but he made no mistakes second time around.
At the track where he had made the podium 12-months ago, Swanepoel defied his long break from racing to hover on the edge of the top ten all moto, but Sword was doggedly battling past fellow hard-pack front-runners Frossard, Guarneri and Boissiere for just six-points.
Zach Osborne was lapped by half-distance as, one week after his Irish moto win, he discovered just how diverse GP tracks can be. Meanwhile, Elliott Banks-Browne, the only other UK qualifier, had to face up to the reality of Lierop as his lap times dropped by 20-seconds after an initial dynamic surge had seen him advance to 14th.

A SECOND-and-a-half faster than everyone in Quali, Marc De Reuver was always favourite for the win, but the Dutchman was content to sit back in fifth in the early laps and let others share the stress. "You can ride more freely when you're not leading!” he later explained.
Ramon had not looked stressed as he made his best start of the year to round turn one behind Max Nagl, but the Belgian was going backwards the entire race after an unsuccessful attempt to dive inside the German at turn three.
The back end of the Suzuki was stepping out all around the track every time the title holder tried to force on and, after only salvaging even seventh place because team-mate De Dycker crashed into the fence on 25-minutes, wasn't talking to anybody.
Ramon's dad, Eddy admitted, however that they had misjudged the track by a mile in set-up: "We have changed settings for race two and just hope it is better.” Unfortunately, it wasn't!
De Dycker was the first to take on Nagl after an unexpectedly vibrant Philippaerts had been forced to ease back his challenge to the KTM, but no-one had an answer when De Reuver laid down new parameters at half-distance and coolly passed and left the lot of them.
Philippaerts chased home Barragan for third and there wasn't a Belgian in the top six - and race two was torture.
"There wasn't a single line anywhere on the track without potholes,” explained Nagl.
With De Reuver outside the top ten after being unable to avoid the fallen Barragan, the German led for two laps after quickly passing Ramon, but there were five leaders in six laps as Philippaerts, De Dycker, a charging De Reuver and then Manuel Priem took turns at the front.

STEFFI Laier was in a class of her own in the World Ladies title races, but Livvy Lancelot had already declared her game plan on Saturday evening: "I'm not interested in the GP win, I only need a fifth and a sixth for the title and I just want to stay out of trouble.”
In the end she won the GP anyway!
Laier was once again miles in front in race two, until the rear-shock broke! Showing a determination few of her male colleagues would even dream of, the German rode the final five laps with the rear wheel constantly smashing the rear fender to still come home in sixth place.
Sophia Paull lost 18th on the final lap of race one, so neither she, Megan Lewis or Amie Goodlad got amongst the scorers.
But leave the final word to the ever-smiling US champion Ashley Fiolek: "Southwick is like a golf course compared to this place!”
