Ruben Fernandez reunites with Tim Gajser at Monster Energy Yamaha
By Team TMX on 2nd Nov 26
Yamaha has confirmed Rubén Fernández as its second factory MXGP rider for 2027, with the Spaniard joining five-time world champion Tim Gajser in a revamped Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP line-up.
The 27-year-old Vigo native will campaign a factory YZ450FM as Yamaha embarks on a new chapter, moving to a centralised, in-house team structure based at its Racing headquarters in Gerno di Lesmo, Italy.
Fernández returns to Yamaha with proven front-running credentials, having claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory in 2023 and finished fifth in that year's MXGP World Championship before improving to fourth overall in 2025. Now, with a fresh environment and new machinery, the Spaniard will be looking to turn that speed into a sustained championship challenge.
"I'm excited about the next chapter of my career and the new environment," said Ruben. "After spending so many years with the same team, the same people and the same bike, I'm really looking forward to this change. Everything is new – the people, the bike, the team – and I'm looking forward to the new challenge. It's really motivating.
"I feel this change is exactly what I need to move forward and take the next step in my career. I can't wait to get to work and I'm really looking forward to testing the bike, as I haven't had the chance to ride it yet.
"I've been with Yamaha in the past and remember really liking the chassis and the way it handled. While I know the YZ450F is different from the YZ250F, and the bikes have developed over the years, I'm positive I can make the most of this opportunity.
"I hope that together with the team we can consistently fight up front and that I can show my full potential."
