Sad death of scrambles star Dave Nicoll
By Geoff Shuttleworth on 12th Mar 23
You may have already heard the sad news that Dave Nicoll has passed away after a long illness.
Dave was another rider who rose to stardom during the sixties when he featured in the TV Scrambles of the day, usually riding a big four-stroke.
In 1969 he won the Luxembourg 500 GP and followed that up with a win at the 1970 Trans-AMA beating Joel Robert, John Banks and Jeff Smith through sheer consistency.
Over the years he rode for the James, Matchless, and BSA works teams, and even had a renaissance in 1976 when he competed in, and won, the British Championship Support Class on a CCM.
Dave retired from racing in 1978 and went on to be Team GB manager for the MXdN. He then became Kurt’s manager during his time in GPs and helped guide him to four runner-up places in the world championship.
After Kurt’s retirement in 1997, he was hired by the FIM as Race Director and gained the respect and admiration of all the teams, riders and promoters.
