Simpson undergoes successful operation

Press Release -- Issued Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 09.30hrs UKFollowing injuries sustained during a training accident yesterday afternoon whilst riding at the Ersel practice facility in Holland, Red Bull KTM factory rider Shaun Simpson was initially admitted to the nearby Veldhofen hospital in order to access and stabilise his condition.
Under the co-ordination of KTM Team Manager Stefan Everts, late last night Shaun was transferred by ambulance to a hospital in Eeklo, Belgium to undergo treatment by Doctor Ghyjselings. Ghyjselings is a specialist in sports injuries and has successfully treated the likes of Stefan Everts and other top riders over a number of years.
During the very early hours of this morning Shaun under went a surgical procedure to address the injuries to his lower left leg. These injuries included a fracture of the tibia approximately 75mm above the ankle joint and three separate factures to his Fibula. The operation was carried out using an epidural injection, which allowed Shaun to be awake throughout the treatment.
Early indications are that the procedure has been a complete success, and that this is the first step towards Shaun making a full recovery over a period of time. Shaun will under go a scan later today to confirm this initial post-operative assessment. Following this scan, Doctor Ghyjselings will then be better placed to provide Shaun with details of the time scales involved in his rehabilitation process.
