SSDT list is GO!
By John Dickinson on 20th Jan 16
THE Edinburgh and DMC has released the entry list for the 2016 Scottish Six Days Trial, as it currently stands, following the necessary ballot as once again the entry was heavily oversubscribed.
That, of course, always brings disappointment to those unlucky not to get an entry, while all those with a ride have been informed by the club.
This is the list as it currently stands although inevitably some riders will have to drop out due to a change of circumstance and some lucky names on the reserve list will get their chance.
Also, if entry fees aren't paid before the closing date those entries will also be forfeited and again a reserve rider will be promoted.
Heading the entry list, which currently stands at 280, is last year's winner Dougie Lampkin.
And despite now riding only a couple of times a year who would bet against the Vertigo development rider, team manager and British importer repeating last year's victory, which gave the factory their dream Scottish win at the first attempt.
Expect Doug's biggest challenge to be from his own team rider James Dabill, who blew out last year when he lost a hatful of time marks on a controversial Tuesday.
Don't think James will make that mistake again...
Sadly, James is the only top-10 world ranked rider entered as the factories have once again opted not to send their well-paid star riders to the biggest trial in the world.
Good to see Michael Brown entered after his nightmare 2015 and heading a rejuvenated Gas Gas challenge and hoping to improve on his best placing of runner-up in the event.
Or how about a Beta win for ‘veteran' Ian Austermuhle?
East Yorks ace Austy bagged the Scott Trial last year after 19 years of trying so how about a Scottish victory to top his heap of podiums?
Gary Macdonald once again heads the home Scottish challenge and GaryMac still craves that SSDT win and the Kinlochleven ace is probably the fittest guy out there with his fell running and mountain bike training.
There's a whole host of riders who can pack the top 10 and fight for the podium, like Welsh champ Iwan Roberts, former SSDT winner Sam Connor, Jack Price, all-rounder Tom Sagar, Richard Sadler and Ross Danby, who will be spearheading the all-new TRS machine with the help of former Scottish multi-winner Steve Saunders.
And Billy Bolt will take a break from his new enduro career to enjoy the event, just as Tom Sagar does.
First-timers include the promising Dan Peace while more experienced runners like Dan Thorpe and Jordi Pasquet will still be fighting at the sharp end of the results.
There's half-a-dozen girls going for it, with the rejuvenated Donna Fox joining World champ Emma Bristow, Becky Cook, Katy Sunter, Spain's Sandra Gomez and Jess Bown back for another crack, after making an excellent debut last year.
There are plenty more top-class runners like Manx riders Juan Knight and Barry Kinley, while veteran Adam Norris amazingly only turns out for the Scottish these days and still shows the youngsters how to ride rocky streams no-stop.
Gilles Burgat won the Scottish back in 1981, along with the World Championship and his home French championship in the same year and these days enjoys the SSDT as a nostalgic ride round.
This year Gilles will be joined by compatriot Fred Michaud, brother of three times World champ Thierry and a former World top 10 man himself.
As ever the Scottish entry is packed with family entries with dads and lads, brothers, cousins, uncles, nephews plus every other combination.
We'll catch up with these when we preview the Scottish closer to kick-off, which this year is Monday, May 2.
