Three in a row for Bou

WHILE Toni Bou only needed a single point from the final GP of the 2009 season to wrap up his third FIM World Trials Championship in a row, the 22-year-old enjoyed anything other than an easy climax. Rain mid-way through the French event turned the trial on its head and left Bou off the podium for the first time this season, although his eventual fourth place was still more than enough for him to be crowned champion once again. Adam Raga claimed the final victory of the year, as the Gas Gas rider predicted the change in weather perfectly and made an early run for home. That left him with only two sections to ride as his rivals battled through much of the second lap in heavy rain. Takahisa Fujinami produced the best performance in the wet conditions to take second spot ahead of an on-form Jeroni Fajardo.
Although it was the usual candidates who once again packed the top order, it was an injured Dougie Lampkin who was so nearly the story of the day. Unable to take part in practice in the two days prior to the event due to his weakened left wrist, Dougie stunned everyone by notching up clean after clean as he rode ahead of the pack due to his poor result in Spain a week earlier.
Lampkin actually maintained his lead until section 14 on the first lap, where a five within a few feet of the begins cards took his tally to nine on observation and one on time at the halfway point. His total of ten put him level with Bou and Marc Freixa, as Raga and Fujinami topped the leader-board when the punch cards were swapped.
Lower down the order, it was not a good day for the Brits, with James Dabill and Michael Brown failing to shine on the mountain sections. The more established duo eventually finished tenth and twelfth respectively and were separated by Alexz Wigg who had made a strong start since moving to the World Championship class after winning the Junior title earlier in the year.

Once again it was Repsol Montesa rider, Laia Sanz, who dominated the competition as she claimed her ninth Womans World Championship title with one round still remaining in Italy next week.
