The 2024 Dirt Store ACU British Motocross Championship wraps up at Preston Docks MX this weekend and champions will be crowned. The first five rounds of the UK’s premier series have been absolute barnstormers and the finale will be no different.
Jeffrey Herlings heads the way in MX1 with the Dutch Red Bull KTM rider 15 points ahead of Tru7 Crendon Honda’s Conrad Mewse. There are 50 points up for grabs in Sunday’s two races but realistically, a pair of sensible rides will see Herlings collect his first-ever British title.
The battle for third place is way more wide open though as Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Josh Gilbert holds a six-point advantage over Brad Todd (DK Offroad Honda) who is four in front of SC Sporthomes Husqvarna’s Tristan Purdon. Ulstermen Jason Meara (Moto-Cycle GASGAS) and Apico Honda’s Martin Barr are embroiled in the battle for sixth in the series while Tom Grimshaw (Apico Honda) and Sam Nunn (John Banks Racing Honda) will resume their VMXdN Foxhill battles as they look to stay ahead of Dan Thornhill (Chambers Racing) to round out the top 10.
The MX2 title is absolutely going to the wire as just 13 points separate the front four heading into Preston. Gabriel SS24 KTM’s Cas Valk will run the red plate but he only has a one-point advantage over Tommy Searle (Dirt Store Kawasaki). Searle is six ahead of Dirt Store teammate Joel Rizzi and former series leader Jack Chambers (Bike It Kawasaki) is six behind him. While on paper it looks like a four-rider shootout for the title that’s not the case and MSR Kawasaki’s Dylan Walsh and Bike It Kawasaki’s Billy Askew both have the pace to mix things up.
That’s a lot of green up front and it’s a little surprising that KTM hasn’t shipped in some talent to ride shotgun for Valk should he need the help. The Dutchman had a well-documented run-in with Chambers at Hawkstone and is sure to feel a little lonely when he’s surrounded by a sea of green at the start gate.
It’s bound to be controversial in some way so get yourselves to Preston to see it all go down live.
As well as the two Pro classes, Youth competitors will be battling it out on the northwest’s favourite sand track, which can be found on Wallend Road in Preston (PR2 2HW), on both Saturday and Sunday. The 250 and 125 Youth, 85BW, 85SW and 65cc titles need claiming and it’ll all be happening as official British Championship titles are on the line.
