LAST weekend, the Herefordshire Twin-shock Club hosted its annual King of the Castle' Motocross at the world famous Farleigh Castle circuit. With good weather and a full entry, spectators and riders alike were in for an excellent weekend's racing.
First on the line for the weekend were the combined classes of the Classic Two-stroke and Classic Four-stroke machines. In the Classic Two-stroke class, three wins and a second for CZ- mounted Rich Warner was enough to earn him the overall win.
In the classic Four-stroke class, 500 BSA rider, Carl Pope, took two comfortable wins on Saturday, but a guest appearance from Andy Roberton on the Sunday resulted in some close fought racing where Roberton took the Sunday race wins. Pope earned himself a second and a third position on Sunday which was enough to give him the overall victory.
In the Over 50, class the power and speed of Maico man Pete Mathia was too much for the other contenders as he rode to four superb race wins. Combined in this class was also a class of Over 60 riders with Yorkshire man Jack McEwan taking the four class wins to take the overall.
As with previous events, the Over 40 class provided some close fought battles. In all four races, eventual overall winner Tim Carter had to fight his way to the front, but hard work and determination resulted in four tremendous class wins, with Mark Jackson taking second and brother Richard Carter taking third.
A full line up of 125cc and 250cc bikes showed that these two classes are becoming more and more popular in the Twin-shock racing. In the 125cc class Yamaha rider John Davis pulled out all the stops to take four hard fought class wins. Racing in the 250cc class was fast and furious with Richard Wood, Dean Warren and Lee Hartill all battling hard to take the overall weekend win.
Eventually it was Kawasaki rider Dean Warren who rode consistently with three seconds and a third who came out the victor.
The mighty power and sound of the CCM and Four-stroke class always proves to be great crowd puller.
In the CCM class, the overall winner was Cornish-man Richard Carter who took three class wins and was set to take the final races victory before a bit too much power took him into the ropes and resulted in a fourth place finish.
In the Four-stroke class, the main racing was between 510 Husky rider Dugald Cullen and HPF-powered Gary Parker. Each rider posted two wins apiece over the weekend but Cullen's results in the other races gave him the overall.
The Expert/ International line-up was full of some of the leading Twin-shock competitors and the racing that resulted was of the highest calibre.
Overall, two wins, a second and a fourth place was enough to give National Twin-shock Champion, Roy Wells, the overall for the weekend with Michael Hand taking the runner-up spot after suffering with bike problems over the weekend.
In Clubman One, Cornwall's Tony Dinham took four excellent race wins to easily take the overall.
In Clubman Two, it was consistency that paid dividends for Honda-mounted Chris Nunn who rraced to four second place finishes, but that was good enough to give him the class overall.
A near full line-up of Sidecar machines resulted in some excellent racing. In the Expert class, battles raged for the whole weekend between Paul Morris/ Mark Snell and Rob Wilkinson/ Mark Nisbet, with Morris eventual overall victors. In the Junior class, consistent riding over the weekend gave Robert/ Faye Barnes the overall class victory.
In the final King of The Castle races, it was once again National Twin-shock, Champion Roy Wells who took home the top prize money in the solo class. In the Sidecar race, a mistake from Wilkinson/ Nisbet gave Morris/ Snell a comfortable lead and eventual race win, with Nigel Marchant/ Mark Rousell taking the Junior class.
